“Thanks,” Finley said. “That’ll do.”

“N-YUK, N-YUK, N-YUK!”

“HEEE-HEEEE! HA-HA-HA-HAAAA!”

Finley covered her ears. “ALL RIGHT!” she yelled. “THAT’S GOOD, THANKS!”

“No problem,” Zack said, taking a bow. “We’re here to help.”

It took her a while, but Finley managed to capture a good collection of laughs. Dad had two types: a cheerful, clucking chuckle and a knee-slapping wheeze that left him gasping for air. Evie did her standard giggle-and-shriek. And Mom’s high-pitched cackle erupted suddenly like a volcano.

The more Finley thought about it, the more she realized that laughs were mysterious. Somehow, they popped up out of nowhere and took over. When Henry really got going, he made a noise like a barking seal. Once Kate had laughed so hard she’d peed her pants. And another time in the lunchroom, Henry had told a joke, and Finley had spewed chocolate milk out her nose. That part hadn’t been so funny — especially to the lunchroom supervisor.

Whatever laughs were, Finley hoped that once the experts heard them, they wouldn’t be able to resist joining in. Clearly, everyone had different funny bones, so the more LaughCrafter attachments, the better. Right now all she had was a cardboard box holding a joke book and canned laughs. Finley planned to keep her eyes peeled for anything else remotely hilarious. She was going funny hunting.
